An aluminum square tube is a type of extruded aluminum. It is used on all types of manufacturing projects where corrosion resistance and the use of lightweight materials are a priority. This includes handrails, fences, gates, support posts and frames, etc. The characteristic of an aluminum square tube is that it has square corners inside and outside and no welds. You can find this material in 6063-T52 and 6061-T6. 6063 square tube is more formable and stronger than a 6061 aluminum square tube.
This type of aluminum square tube is ideal for structural applications. It is typically used in applications that require moderate to high strength capabilities and are lightweight. It is ideal for electrical fittings, structural fixing, couplings, and industrial building applications. 6061 Aluminum Square Tube has excellent corrosion resistance to all types of atmospheric conditions, responds well to anodizing, and can be easily welded or joined by different commercial methods.
In some cases, you will see additional letters after this T6 name. The letters represent the processes completed after heat treatment. While a variety of processes can be performed, the most common involves stress relief by stretching and straightening, which is designated “T6511.” Here, “T651” means that no additional straightening is performed to relieve stress after the stretching process.
While this all seems like industry jargon, many people actually wonder what it means. There have been instances where our customers ordered extruded flat steel made from 6061 aluminum, but ended up being rejected by quality control because they should have ordered one of the sheet products.
